We are starting off on a dry and beautiful note on this Monday. Highs should reach near 70 or above by this afternoon after a great weekend. Clouds will increase later today and it will become mostly cloudy tonight. A series of disturbances will affect us in the week ahead. The lead disturbance will bring us scattered showers tomorrow and an increasing change of rain on Tuesday night into Wednesday. Rainfall amounts will be locally impressive especially in south Alabama.

It still appears the main event will be approaching Alabama from the west by Wednesday evening, Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Right now, it appears the greatest threat of severe weather will be west of Alabama, particularly in the Arklatex region. However, stronger storms will begin to affect Alabama Wednesday night and Thursday morning. This situation will be monitored closely.

Interesting info on the number of tornadoes in February…2010 was an incredibly slow year, with the SPC’s preliminary report showing only 1 tornado in the entire U.S. during February.
For reference, here’s the data for the past few years:
Feb. 07: 52
Feb. 08: 147
Feb. 09: 36
So, 1 isn’t too bad at all.
Why? Well, the reason has to do with the temperature, in a manner of speaking. The jet stream has been pushed far to the south, which has brought unseasonably cold weather well into the South.
Those cold temperatures have kept thunderstorm development to a minimum. Also, the cold air has chilled the water in the Gulf of Mexico, which also makes it more difficult for thunderstorm and tornado formation to occur.
Interesting times…

Skies were clear Monday morning, which has allowed temperatures to once again fall down into the 30s… however, temperatures aren’t as cold as they have been the past few days (weeks, months, etc.) and the clear skies today will allow our temperatures to warm into the 70s by this afternoon. I just wish my weekend was one day longer, eh?
The warmer temperatures will stay with us for at least the next seven days, but not the sunshine. Rain returns to Alabama on Tuesday, and scattered showers and thunderstorms will pass through Alabama every day for the rest of the week. Everyone won’t get rain everyday, but there’s a good chance you will get some rain before the week is out.
Next weekend looks awesome. Expect lots of sunshine with highs in the 60s.
Have a great day!

We often talk about the flow of moist air that comes into Alabama on southerly winds and enhances our chances for rain, but sometimes the humid air originates elsewhere. That’s the case right now, as the southern stream upper-level jet sweeps Pacific moisture across our area in the form of high clouds. No rain fell today, because the air at the surface and mid-level is so dry. Late Sunday afternoon the dew point at Alexander City had dropped to minus-2 degrees.
The relative humidity should be rising over the next 36 hours though, out ahead of a slowly-approaching upper-level disturbance that could trigger a few showers on Tuesday. High-pressure that dominated our weekend is sliding into the Atlantic, but indications are that it’s going to sit off the east coast and retard or block the eastward movement of the wet weather over the Southeast.
Our highest probability of showers and perhaps even a few thunderstorms (60-80%) comes Tuesday night through Wednesday and Wednesday night.

Waking up to a milky sky this morning with clouds ahead of one of our next weathermakers having moved in overnight. Today will see a lot of fairly high and thin clouds, but they will be enough to obscure the sun somewhat today; nevertheless it will still be warmer today despite seeing less direct sunshine. Our winds have shifted from the north last week, to the south for the rest of this week, and this will allow temps to continue to be mild and more seasonable for this time of year. Highs today should reach the mid 60s, and a few 70s are likely on Monday. The clouds will thicken up even more late Monday into Tuesday, and we will have chances of rain, off and on, throughout most of the week next week starting Tuesday. Thunder can’t be ruled out, especially Wed-Thurs, but the chances of severe weather are very low at this time.

It’s no wonder we enjoyed so much sunshine Saturday and will have plenty on Sunday too. The air mass now covering Alabama and the eastern U.S. is very dry, with dew points running in the teens and twenties across our area. The relative humidity will be so low that there is an increased chance for wildfires on Sunday and Monday, and everyone is urged to exercise caution if it’s necessary to burn anything outdoors.
The dry air will maintain our sunny weather right on into Monday, though clouds should be on the increase Monday night and showers should dot the state by Tuesday. By Wednesday and Thursday, a second and more vigorous storm system is expected to produce more widespread showers and possibly thunderstorms.
Heating bills will get a break during the week ahead. Overnight temperatures will likely dip to the 30s Monday morning, the 40s Tuesday morning, and 50s each morning from Wednesday through Friday. Afternoon highs should be around 70 during much of the week.

We have been seeing a lot of sun this past week, but with north winds temperatures have struggled to rise very much; that will begin to change today. We started this morning mostly in the upper 20’s, but with almost full sunshine and dry air, temperatures will rise rapidly today reaching near 60s degrees this afternoon. Sunday looks even warmer, with high well into the 60’s under another a day of sun with a few clouds. More clouds Monday, but warmer still with highs reaching near 70. This is followed by chances of rain from Tuesday to (at least) Friday…a few rumbles of thunder are not out of the question with this rain. It continues to be mild throughout the week, with highs in the 60’s and low 70’s and lows in the 40s and 50s.

The weather is only going to get nicer this weekend. Afternoon highs will hit 60 Saturday and by Sunday highs will be around 67. The mornings will remain cold and below freezing until Monday. After a dry weekend, with very low humidity, expect unsettled weather for much of next week. Afternoon highs will remain in the 60s with morning lows only dropping to around 55 by Thursday. Showers and thunderstorms could produce very heavy rainfall and gusty winds by the middle of the week.
Have a great weekend.

Expect mainly clear skies through tonight with overnight lows around 29. Winds should be light and out of the north. It appears the next three days will be dry with highs increasing each day. This is going to be weekend #3 of gorgeous weather.
Rain will return to the forecast Tuesday. At this point it does look like instability will be lacking to produce any thunderstorms. However, we may see enough instability Wednesday and Thursday to create a few rumbles of thunder. Looks like we’ll stay in a rainy and unsettled pattern most of next week with above average temperatures.
The long range forecast is indicating next weekend should be mainly dry as well.
Tonight: Clear and cold. Low 29. Winds N 3-5/light.
Tomorrow: Sunny and mild. High 61. Winds N 3-7.
Sunday: Sunshine with warmer temps. High 68.

With very dry air in place we are seeing an amazing daily temperature range. After starting at 26 this morning, many areas were near 60 during the afternoon. Tonight, again, look for the mercury to dip into the upper 20’s and rise quickly into the lower 60’s during the day tomorrow. Each afternoon gets a little bit warmer, and by Sunday we should be near 67 for a high and perhaps flirting with 70 degrees or above by Monday. Look for clear nights and sunny afternoons.
Next week should be quite active as a series of disturbances move through the area. The lead disturbance will bring a chance of showers here by Monday night into Tuesday. A second, more robust system will bring showers and thunderstorms to the area by Wednesday night into Thursday. This system needs to be monitored. It could produce some strong storms, perhaps…but it’s too early to be sure at this time. Stay tuned.
After the third coldest winter in 138 years, it should be a great weekend to get out and enjoy the weather. Our spring countdown clock is now down to 15 days!
