Will Winter Take another Swipe?

High-pressure is maintaining a clear sky across Alabama this weekend, so it’s fine weather for star-gazing if you can tolerate the cold.  How cold will we be when the sun comes up on Sunday?  Probably in the 20s over the northern half of the state, with 30s over the south.  Temperatures will rebound nicely on [...]

Sun Returns Today, Snow This Week? (AGAIN?)

Busy morning in the StormWarn Center this morning working on a very tricky forecast and monitoring information coming out of Chile about the massive earthquake there, and the possibility of a tsunami affecting much of the Pacific Basin.  We have a sister station in Hawaii, and if you would like more information throughout the day [...]

NAM Gets On-Board with Snow

The possible snowfall for Tuesday is looking a bit more favorable as the mesoscale models begin to pick up on the low in the Gulf of Mexico.  You can see clearly from the image below moisture is not going to be a problem.  It looks like the freezing line at 850mb is around Montgomery.  This [...]

PM Forecast Update

Looks like the forecast will remain dry and cool through the weekend.  Now, that’s the easy part.  Looking at the 00z, 06z, and 12z model runs – the GFS is now jumping on board with the Canadian and Euro.  This is a wetter and colder solution.  It’s looking more like snowfall will be in the [...]

Early Week Snow Possibilities

It looks like some snow may be in our future for Monday night into Tuesday morning.  The GFS had been holding back on the snow chances by keeping the low supressed in the Gulf of Mexico.  Keeping with tradition this season, the GFS has finally come on board with the Canadian and Euro.  The 00z [...]

PM Forecast Update

Expect a few scattered clouds late tonight with temperatures falling into the mid 20s.  Rain should stay out of the forecast through Monday.  We can enjoy some slightly warmer temperatures for the upcoming weekend.
The forecast next week is still a bit of a challenge.  Forecast models (Euro and Canadian) still paint a wet picture with the [...]

Model Comparisons (GFS vs. ECM)

The challenge with next week’s potential snowfall forecast comes with the position of the Gulf low.  The GFS has performed poorly with the last several Winter systems so most meteorologists are not buying its recent trend of keeping the low farther south in the Gulf.  The Canadian GEM and the European ECMWF have performed the [...]

06z GFS and Snow

Looks like our big system is ramping back up for snow per the GFS.   Per the 06z run, the best chance of snowfall would be Monday night into Tuesday.  Here’s an image showing the 850 freezing line and 6hr accumulated precip.  Still a ways out – we’ll keep you posted.
