Alabama’s weather continues to be generally cloudy, breezy and cool…thanks to a very large upper-level low-pressure area centered over the Ohio Valley. The low is spinning off a series of weather disturbances and these in turn brought us a somewhat showery Saturday. The next disturbance is expected to trigger a few more showers mainly over [...]

It probably looks like it’s raining harder than it really is on this radar image from the Birmingham NEXRAD. The brighter (oranges/yellows) images on radar are mainly from snow melting on its way down to the surface. Radar has a much easier time detecting raindrops than snowflakes. The rain returns a stronger signal to the radar [...]

We’re getting close enough to the possible Winter weather event to nail down a few details. The attached map includes higher-end amounts for the region. Keep in mind – if you’re in a region over 1,000ft of elevation you may receive upwards of 3″ of snowfall. That will be an extreme amount. Most of us [...]

Rain will overspread the area tonight. There is a chance of a rain/snow mix after midnight. Most areas will experience little to no accumulation. Toward daybreak and through lunch Tuesday – we may see some light accumulations east of I-65. Areas with the best chance of accumulations (mainly in grassy areas) include St. Clair, Calhoun, [...]

Here’s my best stab at an almost impossible forecast…
First – areas south of US 80 will probably see rain and nothing but rain. This includes Greenville, Andalusia, Troy, Eufaula, Evergreen, and Dothan.
For most of our area, including Montgomery, Selma, Wetumpka, Prattville and Auburn – mostly rain, only a small chance of a few flurries mixing in [...]

High-pressure is maintaining a clear sky across Alabama this weekend, so it’s fine weather for star-gazing if you can tolerate the cold. How cold will we be when the sun comes up on Sunday? Probably in the 20s over the northern half of the state, with 30s over the south. Temperatures will rebound nicely on [...]

The possible snowfall for Tuesday is looking a bit more favorable as the mesoscale models begin to pick up on the low in the Gulf of Mexico. You can see clearly from the image below moisture is not going to be a problem. It looks like the freezing line at 850mb is around Montgomery. This [...]

Looks like the forecast will remain dry and cool through the weekend. Now, that’s the easy part. Looking at the 00z, 06z, and 12z model runs – the GFS is now jumping on board with the Canadian and Euro. This is a wetter and colder solution. It’s looking more like snowfall will be in the [...]

It looks like some snow may be in our future for Monday night into Tuesday morning. The GFS had been holding back on the snow chances by keeping the low supressed in the Gulf of Mexico. Keeping with tradition this season, the GFS has finally come on board with the Canadian and Euro. The 00z [...]
