Alabama’s weather continues to be generally cloudy, breezy and cool…thanks to a very large upper-level low-pressure area centered over the Ohio Valley. The low is spinning off a series of weather disturbances and these in turn brought us a somewhat showery Saturday. The next disturbance is expected to trigger a few more showers mainly over [...]

Radars are still somewhat active with precip, but the overall coverage and intensity is decreasing rapidly. Precip has become much more patchy in the last hour, and I wouldn’t expect to see too much more accumulation across the area for the rest of the day. Highest snowfall totals are, as expected, on the [...]

Blount County schools are closed for the day, instead of the earlier plan for a late start. ALDOT is sanding several roads there and travel is becoming problematic.

Reports of wintery precip are continuing to increase across the area this morning. We have reports of some surface coverage, primarily around the US Hwy 278 corridor, with other reports of snow, or a rain/snow mix further south. The furthest south I have seen winter precip so far this morning was the last [...]

Most locations this morning are seeing a cold rain, but we are getting reports of some mixed precip in places like Haleyville, Cullman, and even at times in Birmingham and Pell City. None of this has begun to accumulate as yet, and it will have to snow a lot harder for it to get [...]

It probably looks like it’s raining harder than it really is on this radar image from the Birmingham NEXRAD. The brighter (oranges/yellows) images on radar are mainly from snow melting on its way down to the surface. Radar has a much easier time detecting raindrops than snowflakes. The rain returns a stronger signal to the radar [...]

We’re getting close enough to the possible Winter weather event to nail down a few details. The attached map includes higher-end amounts for the region. Keep in mind – if you’re in a region over 1,000ft of elevation you may receive upwards of 3″ of snowfall. That will be an extreme amount. Most of us [...]

Rain will overspread the area tonight. There is a chance of a rain/snow mix after midnight. Most areas will experience little to no accumulation. Toward daybreak and through lunch Tuesday – we may see some light accumulations east of I-65. Areas with the best chance of accumulations (mainly in grassy areas) include St. Clair, Calhoun, [...]

Here’s my best stab at an almost impossible forecast…
First – areas south of US 80 will probably see rain and nothing but rain. This includes Greenville, Andalusia, Troy, Eufaula, Evergreen, and Dothan.
For most of our area, including Montgomery, Selma, Wetumpka, Prattville and Auburn – mostly rain, only a small chance of a few flurries mixing in [...]
