High-Pressure Likely to Slow Approaching Storm

We often talk about the flow of moist air that comes into Alabama on southerly winds and enhances our chances for rain, but sometimes the humid air originates elsewhere.  That’s the case right now, as the southern stream upper-level jet sweeps Pacific moisture across our area in the form of high clouds.  No rain fell [...]

Wildfire Danger High as Dew Points Dive

It’s no wonder we enjoyed so much sunshine Saturday and will have plenty on Sunday too.  The air mass now covering Alabama and the eastern U.S. is very dry, with dew points running in the teens and twenties across our area.  The relative humidity will be so low that there is an increased chance for [...]

Great Weather This Weekend, Rain Returns For The Workweek…

We have been seeing a lot of sun this past week, but with north winds temperatures have struggled to rise very much; that will begin to change today. We started this morning mostly in the upper 20’s, but with almost full sunshine and dry air, temperatures will rise rapidly today reaching near 60s degrees [...]

NEXT FEW DAYS…

High pressure will build into the region giving us plenty of sunshine.  While temperatures will remain cold over the next few mornings, highs are still expected to reach the mid to upper 60s this weekend.

We are expecting a stronger system next week that may bring a decent chance of rain beginning as early as Monday night.  [...]

Brightbanding on KBMX Radar

It probably looks like it’s raining harder than it really is on this radar image from the Birmingham NEXRAD.  The brighter (oranges/yellows) images on radar are mainly from snow melting on its way down to the surface.  Radar has a much easier time detecting raindrops than snowflakes.  The rain returns a stronger signal to the radar [...]

Snow…Maybe…

Snow lovers, prepare to be disappointed…
First off, a beautiful Sunday is underway…skies should be mostly, if not completely, clear with highs this afternoon in the mid 50s.  Clouds begin to increase on Monday ahead of our next weathermaker tomorrow night.  Pouring over the model data last night and this morning reveals what appears to be [...]

Will Winter Take another Swipe?

High-pressure is maintaining a clear sky across Alabama this weekend, so it’s fine weather for star-gazing if you can tolerate the cold.  How cold will we be when the sun comes up on Sunday?  Probably in the 20s over the northern half of the state, with 30s over the south.  Temperatures will rebound nicely on [...]

PM Forecast Update

Looks like the forecast will remain dry and cool through the weekend.  Now, that’s the easy part.  Looking at the 00z, 06z, and 12z model runs – the GFS is now jumping on board with the Canadian and Euro.  This is a wetter and colder solution.  It’s looking more like snowfall will be in the [...]

Early Week Snow Possibilities

It looks like some snow may be in our future for Monday night into Tuesday morning.  The GFS had been holding back on the snow chances by keeping the low supressed in the Gulf of Mexico.  Keeping with tradition this season, the GFS has finally come on board with the Canadian and Euro.  The 00z [...]

PM Forecast Update

Expect a few scattered clouds late tonight with temperatures falling into the mid 20s.  Rain should stay out of the forecast through Monday.  We can enjoy some slightly warmer temperatures for the upcoming weekend.
The forecast next week is still a bit of a challenge.  Forecast models (Euro and Canadian) still paint a wet picture with the [...]
