Active Thunderstorm Weekend

The radar will be lit up and “busy” not only this evening but right on through the weekend.  Slightly cooler temperatures aloft have made for a rather unstable environment which is the recipe for frequent thunderstorms this weekend.  Some of the stronger storms will feature rather intense lightning displays and locally heavy rainfall.  Some of [...]

What’s going on in the Tropics?

The tropics have been quiet for a few days; however, we are still relatively early in the hurricane season. Prime time hasn’t come yet, but we still are keeping our eyes on every small disturbance that could lead to a storm. Here is the latest area of interest off the west coast of Africa. This [...]

Extreme Heat, A Few Storms

A few random thunderstorms brought heat relief to a few lucky communities today, but for most folks, it was business as usual…extremely hot with triple digit heat indices.  Highs made it to the upper 90’s, and in some cases the heat index was up to 107 or higher, putting us in the danger range for [...]

Monitoring Thunderstorms

A complex of string thunderstorms is marching across northern Alabama this afternoon.  A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for about the northern third of the state.  While most of the activity will likely stay north of the I-85, US 80 corridor, it is still possible that some stronger storms will make their way southward.  [...]

Possible Severe Storms This Afternoon

With an unstable atmosphere – it’s possible we could see some strong to severe thunderstorms through 6pm.  The best chance of the stronger storms will track north of I-20.  The primary threats include winds over 5omph, small hail, and frequent lightning.  Stay with Fox 6 for updates.  We are not anticipating a tornado threat.

Rainfall deficit worsens

It’s that time of year where showers and storms are at the same time both common and scarce. A small storm here or there just isn’t enough to help our continually worsening rainfall deficit. So far, Montgomery has received only 1.49″ of rain in the month of July. Of course we are only 12 days into the [...]

Prolonged Lightning Threat Across Central Alabama

A weak front has slipped into Alabama this weekend, and although it’s not likely to produce severe weather in terms of damaging wind, there is certainly a threat of frequent lightning as isolated thunderstorms move slowly to the east-southeast.  At this hour (around sunset on Saturday), areas experiencing lots of lightning include northern Coosa County, [...]

Weekend Heat Relief

Finally, some good news.  There will be some weekend heat relief.  The big upper level ridge of high pressure will begin to break down.  That will allow a frontal boundary to drop southward from the Tennessee Valley into central Alabama tomorrow afternoon.  Showers and thunderstorms will become quite numerous, bringing cooling relief to many, but [...]

Extreme Heat: The Numbers Game

Montgomery’s high temperature of 102 today was not a record.  The record is 105 back in 1881.  But it is the hottest temperature here since August 24, 2007 when we got as high as 101.  That was a very hot August in 2007.  In that month we got to 100 or higher 15 times…that’s a [...]
