A Breezy Start to Spring Break
Alabama’s weather continues to be generally cloudy, breezy and cool…thanks to a very large upper-level low-pressure area centered over the Ohio Valley. The low is spinning off a series of weather disturbances and these in turn brought us a somewhat showery Saturday. The next disturbance is expected to trigger a few more showers mainly over the northern half of the state on Sunday, but the chance for any single location will be quite low.
Temperatures are going to remain below average for most of the week ahead, with morning lows near 40 for Montgomery and afternoon highs in the low-to-mid 60s.
It could be worse, as it was on this date 17 years ago…when the ”Super Storm of the Century” swept out of the Gulf and dumped heavy snow on Alabama. Conditions in Birmingham were disastrous. Areas just east of the city received up to 16 inches of snow…with isolated reports of 20 inches at higher elevations. The storm moved up the Atlantic seaboard, breaking all sorts of weather records…and taking the lives of several hundred people.
