Will Winter Take another Swipe?

High-pressure is maintaining a clear sky across Alabama this weekend, so it’s fine weather for star-gazing if you can tolerate the cold.  How cold will we be when the sun comes up on Sunday?  Probably in the 20s over the northern half of the state, with 30s over the south.  Temperatures will rebound nicely on Sunday, though, thanks largely to the dryness of the air.  When dew points are low you can look for a 25-to-35 degree spread between the morning low and the afternoon high.  We’re forecasting 50s Sunday for most of Alabama, with a few spots down south climbing to 60.

That warmth is one of the key ingredients expected to come together on Tuesday when a low-pressure system throws plenty of moisture northward from the Gulf and right into the path of a cold, Canadian air mass.  The track and timing of that storm center will determine who gets rain…or snow…or a mix.  The latest forecast models are leaning toward somewhat warm conditions Monday night and Tuesday morning with the possibility of a rain/snow mix from roughly Selma to Montgomery to Auburn northward.  With the ground retaining a lot of the warmth of recent days, any snow is likely to melt quickly.

Once the winter storm exits our area Tuesday afternoon, high-pressure will slide back in, providing a mostly clear sky for the second half of the week.
