Average February Weather

It’s a new month and now that we have made it past the coldest part of the winter on average, February usually promises gradually warmer weather for North Alabama. Average high temperatures climb from the low 50s at the beginning of the month to near 60 by the end. The record high for the month is 83 set back in 1996. Overnight lows also rise from the low 30s to upper 30s over the next 28 days. The coldest February temperature was 8 below zero set in 1958. We average about 5″ of precipitation for the month. The range though is quite larger from only .59″ in 1978 to more than a foot (12.52″) in 1939. Even though we are headed toward spring February can still bring wintry weather. Average snowfall for the month is .7″, but we picked up 8″ in February 1958…the same year as that record low.
