A Question of Timing
There’s little doubt we have some rain coming, but questions remain about exactly when it will begin and end. A very messy weather system is going to work its way eastward through the Gulf states, laden with moisture and with plenty of upper air support to keep it goimg. Indications from atmospheric models now show the rain holding off much of Friday with the leading edge approaching east Alabama in the afternoon, then spreading throughout WTVM’s coverage area. After what should be a very wet Friday night here, the rain could hang on into early Saturday before the low moves off to the east, ending the rain. The remainder of the weekend looks cold and at times windy as we bring down a bit of canadian air, but once we are able to clear out sunshine will dominate.
Rain totals could again be rather high in much of the area; expect at least an inch in Columbus. Severe weather won’t be an issue with the low tracking south of here and very little instability.
Other parts of the South will have to deal with wintry weather, either in the form of freezing precipitation or snow. That should be limited to the colder air positioned well north of us, but will involve much of Tennessee, North Carolina, and maybe even the higher elevations of northeast Alabama and North Georgia. One spot that should be right in the thick of the frozen stuff is Nashville, where that city could wind up with its biggest snowstorm in years. Travelers, take note!
