Severe Weather Threat – Maybe?
It seems we have two kinds of weather around these parts – either it’s really really cold or we’ve got mild temperatures and severe weather. Of course, these days you can’t even find pleasant weather in San Diego. Southern California is dealing with heavy rain and winds gusting up to 50mph.
What about our neck of the woods? We will see some rain here as early as the overnight hours. But, the best chance for rain and storms will be tomorrow afternoon and evening. It looks like the greatest threat for severe weather will occur overnight into Wednesday morning. The limiting factor will be instability…that’s why our southernmost counties are favored for the stronger storms. As our colleagues in Montgomery have indicated South Central Alabama all the way to the Florida panhandle will see strong to severe storms. I do think there is enough wind shear to see some isolated tornadoes. A lot of the forecast depends on how far north the warm front makes it across the state.
The severe weather map below indicated where I’m thinking the greatest threat for severe storms (hail, high winds, and isolated tornadoes) could occur based on model guidance today. This is not a classic severe setup by any stretch of the imagination, but we do need to be prepared. This system will likely linger through Thursday and may bring upwards of 1-3″ of rain to the area.
We’ll keep you posted both online and on-air.
