Some cold weather tidbits

It’s been a cold 2010 so far and it’s about to get even colder. Another surge of arctic air will push into the area on Thursday…this one even colder than what we have been dealing with the last few days. Light snow arrives with the colder air (check out all the numerous posts here about that). Here are some cold weather tidbits about our current cold snap in North Alabama courtesy of the National Weather Service in Huntsville.

—Since 7pm New Year’s day we have only spent at most 2 hours above freezing! (We may add a couple more hours tomorrow afternoon)

—The record number of consecutive days below 40 degrees is 14 (we did that in January 1978). If the forecast holds we will get at least 9 days out of our current streak.

—Some of the coldest morning lows since 2003 are expected by the weekend. Lows will be below 10 degrees, however we did hit some single digits lows as recently as Jan 16th last year.

—With a forecast high of 23 Friday and 20 on Saturday, we could see back-to-back days below 25 for the first time since 1996.

—We are on track for the coldest first week of the year since 1940!
