Clouds Slowly Depart

Saturday’s windy weather was a result of the steep pressure gradient between a strong low off the mid-Atlantic coast and a sprawling high-pressure center over northeast Utah.  Westerly winds gusted at times above 20 mph, but Sunday’s breeze should be much lighter.

We’ll be dry on Sunday.  In fact, we’re not likely to see precipitation again till Wednesday, when the next storm system could bring scattered thunderstorms for Christmas Eve.  Most importantly, at this point it appears that temperatures will be well above freezing by then, so we’re not anticipating any snow for the state this Christmas.

Minor flooding continues on area rivers, such as the Alabama at Montgomery, where the stage Saturday morning was 36.7 feet.  Flood stage at the Capital City is 35 feet, and the river is forecast to fall below that level early Sunday morning.
